With all the heat and humidity, we finally caved and went to see a movie here in Kyoto. We saw Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. If you can read the large katakana characters at the tip of Harry's wand, you will see that this translates roughly as Ha-ri-i Po-t-ta-a. Awesome!
Three things about going to the movies in Japan:
1) You get assigned seating regardless of how full the theatre is. Maybe 20 people were at our showing of HP5 and we still had to point on a theatre chart to the specific seats or area that we wanted. Got perfect seats though!
2) It is expensive. We went on one of two special discount days each month where the price is "only" ¥1000 instead of ¥1800. This is roughly $9 discounted from $16. Despite coming from the northeast, I had gotten accustomed to the $1 days at Crossroads Festival in Tucson and the $6 student tickets at the Angelika in Houston.
3) A majority of the movies are in English with subtitles, but some are dubbed with Japanese voice actors. I can't wait until we know enough Japanese to check out (and understand) the voiceovers!
